Adam's September 28th email

Dear Family,

I got transferred last week! After having 9 months in Pucallpa, I've
moved back to Iquitos, only this time, to an area that all the
missionaries talk about, which is called Nauta. A little bit about
Nauta is that it's about 2 hours out from Iquitos (nearly 100 KM),
making it one of the most secluded areas in the mission, like Campo
Verde, but nearly triple.

But why do all the missionaries talk about it? Because this place is
PARADISE! Nauta is a very peaceful and well-maintained city in the
middle of a bunch of jungle growth! Here, we have both the city, and
the most jungley area in the entire mission! The people here are
extremely humble too, and they'll easily accept us into their homes to
share the gospel with them! Nauta has a branch, but there are so many
members that there have been plans to build a ward!

My new companion is one of the best guys ever! His name is Elder
Maldonado, and he's from Argentina! He's got about six months in the
mission and he's super obedient! We live with another companionship,
but we don't live in an apartment. We live in a house! A huge house
with a washing machine, a kitchen, and a deck to the back where we can
watch the monkeys play around. This place is seriously one of the best
places I've seen in my life!

I'm very thankful to the Lord to be able to serve in this area! I know
that I'll be able to learn a lot and to also be able to make a
difference in the lives of the people here. These missionary
assignments are always inspired, and I'm ready to present the gospel
in these people's lives!

Love,
Adam

Adam's September 21st email

Dear Family,

This week was a bit adventurous for us! Our main area is in a segment of Pucallpa called Kilometer 34, and that's where we work each and every day. But THIS week, we ventured out into Kilometer 35!

I don't know why we haven't gone there sooner, because we found a few people who, I believe, have been looking for the gospel in their lives. We found man, whose name is Roly, who used to attend church last year with his family. He went for about a month, but the missionaries teaching him suddenly disappeared (Back when they closed Campo Verde). We found him again and showed him the video of "Because He Lives", and he had a pretty strong testimony of Jesus Christ already! I feel the Lord had prepared this family for us!

Another person we found was a reference named Jessica. She was a reference from a stake member. She's very interested in the church, but something that impressed me about her is her view of marriage. She's very interested in temples, so we explained a bit about temples to her, and the topic of temple marriage came up. We asked her if she was married, and her reply was impressive:

She says she is married, and that is should be against the law to live together without matrimony (which, down here in the jungle, is a bold statement. Good for her!) She also bashed on divorce too, saying that divorce stems from just a little problem that gets bigger and bigger, and related it to a house problem. If there's a problem with your house, such as a broken window, you shouldn't burn the entire house down. You gotta fix it. Just like how there could be problems in marriage. Marriage isn't for burning the house down, but for fixing the little problems together.

I, honestly, was inspired. I've never met another investigator down here in my entire mission with that view of marriage. She's still strong in her marriage with her husband, which has lasted for about 10 years now. I'm going to use her example whenever I'm faced with a marriage/divorce situation with other investigators.

She, and her daughter, came to church on Sunday too! We're starting to see some success rising back up in Campo Verde!

How's everyone doing over there? Is the start of school doing well for everybody? What's everyone studying? Dad's in Oman, too? Oh man! Good luck, Dad! I'm praying for you!

Oh, by the way, here's the link to the "Because He Lives" video I mentioned. I don't know if you've all seen it yet, but here it is anyways!

Love,
Elder Dixon

Fast for Katie and Adam's email

Dear Family,

We love you all!  Opa took a quicky trip to Oman ( oh man!) but he's back now.

As many of you know, Katie has had inspiration to alter her chemotherapy treatments because they were becoming ineffective and possibly harmful.  We are convinced she has chosen an inspired course, but we also know she will need our love, support and prayers more than ever.

This Sunday, September 27, we will be fasting for Katie and invite all of you to participate.  We know fasting and sincere prayer have great power.

Love,

Oma and Opa

Adam's September 13th email

Dear Family!

This week was the week! I hit my year mark last Wednesday! In the mission, I'm officially one year old! Man, I feel so old. To celebrate the event, I burned a shirt! Don't worry though, this shirt I burned had some big black paint stains since forever ago that could never wash out. I never wore the shirt and it burnt up very well!

I'm including some pictures of the missionary ritual. I especially love the one where the flame is like a giant ball of fire. That one's cool.

This week's been better for me, but it was EXTREMELY hot too. The hottest week I've had in the mission! We got cooked up! But, we managed to find some people who have a ton of promise!

One person we found had actually spoken with the missionaries in her old city, and was super close to getting baptized. She found us and we've managed to teach her a little bit. She's progressing super fast, by reading the Book of Mormon and attending church already.

Another person that's (finally) progressing is the father and grandfather of our recent converts. We've tried teaching him again and again, but the guy just wasn't progressing. Recently, he kind of had a nasty motorcycle accident and almost died, because he was driving drunk. He's alright now, but he took that as incentive to change his life.

Things are starting to run smoothly again! I've kind of had some rough bumps and stumps recently, but those are starting to finish! Everything from now on will run perfectly!

Love,
Adam

Dear Family,

This week was pretty crazy for the Peruvian waterworks and electric company. The first half of the week, we had no water coming from the shower nor water to flush the toilet with, and only just a little pressure coming from the sink. To shower, we had to fill up a small barrel we had and have ourselves a bucket shower! I've gotten used to the cold water here, though, so it wasn't that bad! That lasted for about three days.

Next, the last two days of the week, we had constant power-outages. Everything turned on and off, on and off. One day, we were teaching this family that owns a mini-farm about a mile out from our normal area, and to get to their house, we had to walk through a field usually filled with cows and bulls.

When we had finished teaching them, the power had gone out for the first time. We managed to shuffle our way through the darkness out into the field until I remembered, "Wait a minute! Our phone has a flashlight!". It was pitch black in the field and we couldn't see anything. When I turned on the phone, I found that there was this HUGE bull standing right in front of us, just staring. It scared the daylights out of me! Luckily, we managed to slip past without getting chased down.

We found a family here that had just moved from a different part of Peru (forgot what it was called...heh heh heh...), but they had been recieving lessons from the missionaries there for about a month. We managed to teach them, and they understand pretty well!

This week, on Wednesday, I reach my 1-year mark! (Happy Birthday, Peter!)  I can't believe that it's already been a year since I've left on my mission! Either it's a missionary thing or an adult thing, but the time has just whizzed past! I'm going to conform with the mission tradition and burn a shirt! I've got a stained one prepared for the event.

Oh, by the way, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, MOM AND DAD!

Love,
Adam
