Elder Adam's April 27th email

Dear Family,

It rained this week. A lot. This was the most rain I've seen in my life, let alone my mission, and it didn't stop! It was pretty gnarly, seeing that much rain. At the end of the week, though, the streets were completely flooded! There was water everywhere! I've never seen a real flood in my life. Luckily, we had special boots that the mission gave to us just for that. The whole day, we got to wade through knee-high water to and from our appointments. Now I feel like a real Amazon-explorer!

This week, we had the president come and visit us here in Pucallpa. We had interviews and room inspections, but the evening after our interview, we had planned to have one of the assistants to the president tag along with us for a few hours in our work. We got a call an hour before from the president saying that he, instead, will tag-along with us.

I was a little nervous, to be honest. I didn't know why the president would want to come with us instead of having one of his assistants do it. But it was pretty great. Teaching with the president was more productive and more fun than I had thought it would be. After we had finished, he gave us some advice, told us we were doing a good job, and went back to the stake. I could certainly be willing to do that again.

We've got a baptism coming up this week too! We're going to baptize a 10-year old kid named Max, who wants to be baptized because his sister was almost a year ago. He's super excited for his baptism. It's kind of a new challenge teaching a child, but in the end, it's been pretty fun! (For me, at least. My comp doesn't like it very much )

The week after that, we're going to baptize Ludwig. I told you last week, but I forgot to include the totally awesome story about it.

So we had started teaching Ludwig at the beginning of February, but we weren't having much success with him. He wasn't exactly enthusiastic, he was hard to reach, and overall, it resulted in us losing contact with him altogether. About a month later, his member friend, Camilo, was driving us around to our appointments. All of a sudden, he says, "Hey, let's go to the church".

"Why do you want to go to the church?" we asked.

He shrugged and continued driving, saying, "I dunno. I just have a good feeling about it."

The church was far from our next appointment, but we had a good feeling about that too, so we went to the church. Turns out, the Zone Leaders were there and they were in desperate need of a vehicle. We let them borrow Camilo and we were left in front of the church.

After we used the Church's bathroom, we walked back out onto the street, and Ludwig just shows up out of nowhere. We asked how he was doing and what he was up to.

"I came to play soccer with the guys, but I guess I'm a little bit early," he explained.

It was too perfect. Not only through following the Spirit did we get to use the bathroom, but we also helped out the Zone Leaders a ton and found Ludwig again! There are so many miracles we can see in our lives if we're willing to listen and do what the Spirit says! It's definitely Ludwig's time right now and he's super eager to live the gospel.

How is everyone doing down there? I'm glad Dad made it back safely! Is Katie doing well? How about my awesome brothers and sisters? Nieces and nephews?

I love you all and I pray for you every day!

THE REDCOATS ARE COMING!!!

So, yesterday I played hooky from work and went to Lexington and Concord where they had all kinds of reenactments and parades for Patriots Day. Unfortunately we arrived just after the reenactment ended, but we did get to see the retreat of the British.

They also had cannons that they shot off all morning.

And then of course the parade where there was an awful lot of fifes and drums.

The area was gorgeous and I'll probably go up again when there aren't as many people.

However, I think my favorite part was the cool old cemetery with gravestones of people who died 300 years ago. I didn't get to explore the whole cemetery (because the group I was with didn't think cemeteries were cool), so I'll have to go back to look for the coolest phrase and oldest grave.

Adam's April 20th Email

Dear Family,

This week's been pretty great! We have more investigators coming to Church and all of them are quite excited about the Church. In fact, we were able to set apart a baptism date for one of them, for the 9th of May! His name is Ludwig, and he's Steven's age. He works as a vehicle repair guy, so explaining repentance is pretty easy when I use the right analogies, such as dirty, gritty, and oily hands get clean when they're washed. He's super excited about it all, and we're also trying to get his sister, Evaline, to commit to baptism too, but she's a bit harder to encounter.

The success of this week definitely came in Saturday and Sunday, when we had a special fast because of many baptisms falling through. In Saturday, we had missionary exchanges and I got to have Elder Manrique tag along with me. I was extremely surprised how good this guy was at teaching the people, despite only having 4 months in the mission. I learned a great amount of stuff that I applied into my lessons on Sunday, in which the Spirit was stronger. It really goes to show the blessings that comes from fasting, right?

We had an entire family come to Church this week, which is fantastic because missionary work revolves around teaching families! Earlier this week, when we invited them to Church, the wife of the family asked, "Does your Church offer hair cutting services?"

My companion and I looked at each other, then back to her. "No...sorry."

I still have yet to know why she asked that, but that night, I had a crazy dream. The president of the mission changed P-Days into Haircut Days! The missionaries don't get their hairs cut. They give the haircuts! All I could remember from the dream was cutting off a big lop of hair with a giant pair of scissors and saying, "Okay! You're done!" And everyone loved it! I think it might've been a sign that it's time for a haircut.

That was just one of the strange dreams I had this week. First I was a barber. Next dream, I was a professional MMA fighter (that was pretty cool). Earlier this month, I had a dream where I became a wizard by buying "Captain Rolgy's Beginners Pamphlet for Casting Spells" for just $20 at Seagull Book (one of the best, most detailed dreams of my life. There was more to it too).

How is everyone down there doing? I hope Katie's doing well, along with her fundraiser! It sounds like some really cool things are going on up there with that fundraiser! How did Helen's interview go? I hope Dad's doing well in Saudi Arabia.

I love you all! I just want to tell you that the power of fasting is real, and it will bless your lives!

Dear Family,

We got a baptism this week! Kenyo Gonzales was baptized last Saturday by yours truly! I'll include a picture of it! He's so cool! Super, super quiet, but I've never seen him smile so much. I think he's pretty happy with the decision he made to be baptized. I don't blame him! A cool guy like him knows what's right.

We were supposed to have two baptisms this week, though. Pedro, unfortunately, backed down on us the last minute. :( His family is against the church and was giving him a hard time about his decision. He didn't want to hurt his relationship with his family, so he canceled his baptism. Elder Nina and I are currently thinking of ways we could help him out, and we're pretty convinced that if he had member friends, things would go differently. I've come to notice just how important members are to the work of the Lord.

On the other hand, we found tons of families this week that are pretty interested in what we have to offer. That's pretty great! We're also teaching some investigators who have family members who are a part of the church, both of which want to get baptized! We're teaching a 20-year old girl named Stephanie and a 10-year old kid named Max, and both of them want to get baptized.

We had another set of transfers last week, and nothing much happened again. Elder Haymond got a new companion (he and his old companion were getting along by the time that happened) named Elder Manrique. The guy's super good at teaching, and he and I share the same trainer, Elder Uribe.

That's pretty much what's been going on this week. We got a stake conference coming up, so we gotta confuse investigators again with what chuch they need to go to and when. :P

How is everyone doing over there? I continue praying for Katie. Is Dad doing well in Saudi Arabia? How about everyone else?

I love you all and I pray for you every night!

Helen's Job Interview

Dear Family,

I just got a call from Helen and she has a job interview on Monday for a charter school close to where she lives. She has asked if we would pray for her. This job seems perfect for her and would help her out a lot. So if we could all keep her in our prayers she would appreciate it so much! Thank you so much for your faith.

Love,
Mom

Dear Family!

My second General Conference in the field was amazing! There were so many awesome talks! It seemed like they really focused on families this time and how missionaries that get home gotta get married as soon as possible (okay! :D). I'm surprised at how many General Authorities spoke this time as well! Wow! General Conference was truly the best. Too bad I didn't have jelly beans this time. :P

Unfortunately, our two baptisms were postponed to next week because of the crazy conference schedule. And transfers are this week. If I get transferred to a different area and miss my 2nd and 3rd investigator baptisms just like my 1st...that wouldn't be the brightest time of my mish. But our investigators that are getting baptized are pretty cool. Kenyo is super docile, and it's kind of impossible to guess what he's thinking, but I think he's excited. He watched the entire Joseph Smith movie on YouTube, so that counts for something.

Pedro, our other investigator who's getting baptized, is super awesome right now. He's not even baptized and he's already giving us references, inviting his friends to church, and bible-bashing other people. I'm so proud of him. We asked him earlier what size his waist was and he looked at both of us and replied, "Dixon-sized".

I have been losing a significant amount of weight on the mission, and my waist size has dipped down a few numbers...at least, I think. Later that week, a drunk guy came up to us, looked at me, and slurred, "You're really biiiiiiiiiiiig." Okay. :P Perhaps I'm not losing as much weight as I thought, or maybe that guy was a little too woozy.

This week was fantastic for finding new people! We found a bunch of families that are interested in what we have to say. We even had a few people straight out tell us, "I'm very interested in what you have to say" after the first lesson. Down here, that kind of stuff is rare. I'm confident at what's coming up!

How is everyone over there? I hope everyone's in good health and that Katie's fundraiser is doing well! How's Dad doing in the Middle East? How are all my favorite nieces, nephews, and siblings?

I love you all! You guys are the coolest! Thanks for all your prayers!

P.S. Don't worry, Mom. I feel great down here!
